The dried peels of the orange tree, likely originating in China, were used in ancient Chinese medicine to treat coughs and colds.

Chemical Composition of Orange Oil

Limonene

Limonene is a colorless liquid and is the major component in the oil of citrus fruit peels. It occurs more commonly in nature as the fragrance of oranges and is a flavoring agent in food manufacturing, a renewables-based solvent in cleaning products, a fragrance ingredient for cosmetics products, and a fragrance in perfumery and personal care products. It is also used as a botanical insecticide and organic herbicide.

Myrcene

Myrcene, or β-myrcene, is a colorless oil that occurs widely in essential oils. It has a pleasant odor but is rarely used directly. Thus, it is more highly valued as an intermediate for preparing flavor and fragrance chemicals, such as menthol, citral, citronellol, citronellal, geraniol, nerol, and linalool.

α-Pinene

α-Pinene is an organic compound found in the oils of many species of coniferous trees, notably the pine. It is an anti-inflammatory and is likely antimicrobial. It is also known to aid memory and increase alertness.
