There are so many different ways to use essential oils. One of the most common is diffusion.
In diffusion alone, there’s a variety of fun and effective methods to disperse the aroma of essential oils.
You might already be familiar with some types of diffusers – probably an ultrasonic diffuser in your room or an on-the-go inhaler? Today, we are going to introduce to you a mostly unheard of yet incredibly interesting way to diffuse your favorite essential oils: passive diffusion.
Active vs. Passive Diffusers
Active Diffusers
Most people have heard of active diffusers. These are diffusers we commonly use, like ultrasonic or nebulizing diffusers. These diffusers use a stimulus like electricity, ultrasonic vibrations, airflow, etc., to diffuse essential oils. They can fill large spaces with the aroma of your favorite oils in a short period of time. Some examples of active diffusers are:
- Ultrasonic Diffuser
- Aromatherapy Inhaler
- USB Car Diffuser
Passive Diffusers
Passive Diffusers, on the other hand, dissipate the aroma of essential oils in a natural manner (without the help of a stimulus) continuously until the oils evaporate completely. It provides a much more gentle, subtle fragrance in a given space and is perfect for those with aroma sensitivities or those who prefer less intense diffusion. Try passive diffusion through:
- Reed Diffusers
- Jewelry Diffusers
- Ceramic Diffuser: Unicorn, Succulent, Flower
- Lava Rock Diffuser
- Wood Bead Garland Diffuser
- Essential Oil Buddy
Benefits of Passive Diffusion
Convenient to Use
There’s no need for plug-and-play when it comes to passive diffusion. You get continuous diffusion all day long without having to refill or worry about the electricity.
Gentle Aroma
Since passive diffusers emit a subtle aroma of essential oils, they are perfect for people (and pets) that find the intense aroma output of active diffusers irritating and overpowering. Passive diffusers are also a great option for small rooms that don’t require a large output of aroma.
Less Risk
The absence of stimulus to diffuse the oils’ aroma makes passive diffusers safer to use. There’s no need for electricity, water, or heat. This means you can leave your house or office without worrying about what might happen with your diffusers!
Make the Most of Your Passive Diffusers
Passive Diffusion has many benefits; however, it is important to keep in mind that it will usually not provide a noticeable scent in a large open room like a regular diffuser can provide. Passive diffusers are a great option in small spaces like a desk, small bathroom, car, or bedside table. If you prefer using passive diffusers or are interested in starting, here are some tips to make the most out of your diffusers.
Clean, Clean, Clean
Regular dusting makes your diffusers look and work great. Also, make sure to gently clean and dust your diffuser every time you add more essential oils to it.
Lovin’ Some Base Notes
Essential oils with base note aroma stick around the longest. These heavy oils have stronger scents that diffuse gradually and can last upwards of 6 hours. Some of our favorite base notes are:
FLORAL
- Jasmine
- Ylang-Ylang (also a middle)
EARTHY
ORIENTAL
SPICY
WOODSY
- Sandalwood
- Myrrh (also a middle)
