History of Lime Essential Oil

racing the origins of lime is like exploring the pages of a historical mystery. Although definitive answers remain elusive, many scholars lean towards the Indonesian archipelago, or possibly the nearby Asian mainland, as the birthplace of this zesty fruit. Furthermore, the narrative of the lime’s global journey suggests that Arab traders played a pivotal role. Around 1000 A.D., they may have introduced this citrus gem to India, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Africa. This spread not only signifies the importance of limes in early trade routes but also highlights how cultures worldwide embraced the lime, incorporating it into culinary, medicinal, and spiritual practices.

Chemical Constituents

Limonene

Limonene is a colorless liquid and is the major component in the oil of citrus fruit peels. It occurs more commonly in nature as the fragrance of oranges. Limonene is a flavoring agent in food manufacturing, a renewables-based solvent in cleaning products, a fragrance ingredient for cosmetics products, and a fragrance in perfumery and personal care products. It is also used as a botanical insecticide and organic herbicide.

γ-Terpinene

Gamma-terpinene has a role as an antioxidant, a plant metabolite, a volatile oil component, and a human xenobiotic metabolite. It is a major component of essential oils made from citrus fruits and has strong antioxidant activity. It has a lemon odor and is widely used in food, flavors, soaps, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, tobacco, confectionery, and perfume industries.

β-Pinene

β-Pinene is a monoterpene, an organic compound found in plants. It has a woody-green, pine-like smell.
