What Is Tea Tree Oil and How Does It Work?

Plant Description
Tea Tree is a part of the Myrtaceae family. It’s native to Australia and is a small tree that grows to be about seven meters with a bushy crown and white-ish, papery bark; flowers occur in white or cream-colored masses of spikes and give the tree an appearance of looking fluffy.
Chemical Constituents
Terpinen-4-ol
Terpinen-4-ol is considered the major constituent of Tea Tree Oil that has strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
γ-Terpinene
Gamma-terpinene is a major component of essential oils made from Citrus Fruits and has strong antioxidant activity. It has a lemon aroma and is widely used in food, flavors, soaps, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, tobacco, confectionery, and perfume industries.
α-Terpinene
Alpha Terpinene has perfume and flavoring properties but is mainly used to confer a pleasant odor to industrial fluids.

Things to Remember When Using This Oil

Always dilute an essential oil when using it on the skin. This essential oil is unlikely to cause skin irritation when diluted properly. If the oil has been oxidized (left with the cap off for long periods of time) it is more likely to cause skin irritation. Check out this dilution chart for diluting this essential oil properly.

This oil is generally safe to use if you are pregnant. Consult your doctor prior to use.
