Heating pads may be one of the most soothing additions to any wellness routine. These versatile tools are known for their ability to decrease pain and discomfort associated with muscular injuries. In fact, a 2014 research1 found that heating pads could help improve blood flow and decrease pain in individuals with such injuries.

However, heating pads are also beneficial for those looking to improve flexibility or muscle strength. They can even reduce swelling, making them a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their physical wellness.

What’s in This Homemade Rice Heating Pad?

So whether you’re looking to soothe stress, ease muscle tension, or just create a more relaxing atmosphere, this aromatherapy heat pad has got you covered.

Cypress Essential Oil

This fragrant oil boasts an herbaceous and fresh aroma that is sure to transport you to a place of calm. In fact, the scent of Cypress Essential Oil is so centering, that it’s often used in meditation practices. When infused into a rice heating pad, Cypress Essential Oil is the perfect tool for achieving total relaxation.

Cotton Balls

By adding your favorite essential oils to cotton balls and inserting them into a heated pad, you can create a soothing atmosphere that promotes relaxation and melts away stress. This simple yet effective method can bring a sense of calm to any wellness routine.

Rice

Rice provides a comforting weight and also keeps the pad heated for longer periods of time. However, if you don’t have any rice on hand, you can also use other similar items such as flaxseed, dried beans, boiled and dried cherry pits, corn, or dried lentils.

Estimated Shelf Life: 1 year
Yield: 1 rice bag

Ingredients

  • FROM YOUR BOX
  • Aromatherapy pillow

  • 25 drops Cypress Essential Oil

  • FROM YOUR HOME
  • ~2½ cups rice

  • 5 cotton balls

Directions

  • Unzip the pillow lining, fill ¾ full with rice, and seal closed with a zipper.
  • Place the aromatherapy rice bag in the microwave and heat for 1 minute. Continue to heat the rice bag in 30-second intervals until the desired heat is reached.
  • Add essential oils to cotton balls (5 drops per ball). Place cotton balls inside the aromatherapy rice bag.
  • To use, apply to the affected area for soothing relief. To reuse, remove cotton balls and reheat them. Reapply essential oils to cotton balls as needed for the desired aroma.

Notes

  • Tip: You can also freeze this aromatherapy rice bag for cooling relief.
  • When you microwave the rice pillow, any essential oils inside the pillow will evaporate. This is why the oils are added separately to the cotton balls. This also makes it easy to swap the essential oils with your desired choice. Simply switch out the cotton balls.
