What is Anise Star Essential Oil?

Anise Star Essential Oil is a natural oil that’s extracted from the fruit of the anise star tree, which is native to some parts of Southern and Eastern Asia. This tree is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree that can grow up to 8 meters tall (26 feet). The fruit is picked before it ripens and is then set in the sun to dry and harden. The fruit’s distinct star shape and bold aroma make it easy to identify. Steam distilled from the fruit, Anise Star Essential Oil is a popular ingredient in aromatherapy and is known for its strong, licorice-like scent. Not only does it smell amazing, but it also provides many aromatherapy benefits.

What’s The Science Behind This Oil?

trans-Anethole

Anethole, also known as anise camphor, is widely used as a flavoring substance. It is a derivative of an aromatic compound that occurs widely in nature, in essential oils. It contributes a large component of the odor and flavor of anise and fennel (both in the botanical family Apiaceae), anise myrtle (Myrtaceae), licorice (Fabaceae), magnolia blossoms, and star anise (Schisandraceae). It is a colorless, fragrant, mildly volatile liquid.

Estragole

Estragole (p-allylanisole, methyl chavicol) is a phenylpropene, a natural organic compound. It is a colorless liquid, although impure samples can appear yellow. It is a component of various trees and plants, including turpentine (pine oil), anise, fennel, bay, tarragon, and basil. It is used in the preparation of fragrances.

Linalool

Linalool refers to two enantiomers of a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in many flowers and spice plants. It has multiple commercial applications, the majority of which are based on its pleasant scent (floral, with a touch of spiciness). In plants, it is a metabolite, a volatile oil component, an antimicrobial agent, and an aroma compound. Linalool has uses in the manufacturing of soaps, fragrances, food additives as flavors, household products, and insecticides.
