DIY Deodorizer Spray for Clothes & Sports Gear

Have a chest full of blankets or clothes you plan to wear again without a wash in between?

Often our clothes are clean enough to wear again, but they no longer have the fresh smell of clothes just out of the laundry.

Today, we’re going to make a Refresh Spray that will make your clothes smell clean and fresh without the work of another load of laundry.

What I Love About This Recipe

Hi! Katie here, I’m an aromatherapist for Simply Earth. I write blog posts and plan our subscription recipe box. When I’m not busy being a mom or working for Simply Earth, I love to coach soccer.

If you have experience with the sport, you know things can get stinky quick. This deodorizer spray recipe keeps my sports gear from stinking up my gym bag so it’s ready for the next practice.

What’s in the Recipe

deodorizer spray, refresh spray 1

Here’s what you can find in our homemade fabric deodorizer spray. It’s an all-natural ingredients deodorizer spray for clothes so you can keep them clean toxin-free.

Distilled Water

Using distilled water will allow your recipe to last longer, but if you don’t have any on hand or expect to go through this spray quickly, you can use tap water.

Witch Hazel

This is optional in the deodorizer spray recipe. You could also replace it with vodka or rubbing alcohol. These ingredients will allow the essential oil to partially dilute into the water (whereas normally they would be totally separated). This helps the aroma last longer too.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil has a very fresh scent. It’s antibacterial which will help kill the stink in your clothes.

Ho Wood Essential Oil

Ho Wood Essential Oil is mainly in this deodorizer spray recipe because it smells so good. You’ll love its fresh calming aroma on your clothes.

Relief Essential Oil Blend

Made up of Rosemary, Juniper Berry, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Copaiba Essential Oils, Relief Blend has a refreshing smell and will also help deodorize your clothes.

Carrier Oil (optional)

The recipe is cooling and energizing. If you add 1 tbsp of carrier oil to this recipe (like olive oil, aloe vera, almond oil), you can use this recipe to refresh yourself as well.

Things to Remember with This Recipe

Always dilute an essential oil when using it on the skin. This essential oil recipe is unlikely to cause skin irritation when diluted properly. If the oil has been oxidized (left with the cap off for long periods of time) it is more likely to cause skin irritation. Check out this dilution chart for diluting this essential oil properly.

If you are pregnant, consult your doctor prior to use.

This essential oil recipe is safe to use with kids aged 10+.
