Exfoliating

Sugar scrubs are exfoliating. By gently rubbing the scrub on your skin, you remove dead skin to promote beautiful glowing skin.

Cleansing

Another benefit of sugar scrubs is that they are cleansing. Scrubbing your skin with a natural sugar scrub cleans the dirt off your skin.

Moisturizing

It softens the skin by cleaning and exfoliating away dead skin to reveal new skin underneath.

Boosts Circulation

The action of exfoliating helps boost circulation to the area.

Sugar

There are many different kinds of sugar you can use to make a natural sugar scrub. The most popular sugars are brown sugar and white sugar.  Sugar as an exfoliator is best used on the body rather than the face.

Sugar grains create too strong of exfoliation for the more sensitive skin on our face. But you can grind it down in a coffee grinder to create smaller grains for safer exfoliation.

Use brown sugar over white sugar if you have sensitive skin. It has smaller grains for gentler exfoliation.

If you are looking to exfoliate rough calloused skin use white sugar or salt to get rid of those dead skin cells.

Natural Additives

Add more natural ingredients to complement your sugar scrub. Here are some natural ingredients you can use to personalize your sugar scrub.

More Natural Exfoliants

You can add more natural exfoliants to compliment your sugar scrubs. You can add jojoba beads, bamboo powder, ground rice, almond meal, ground walnut shells, raspberry seeds, or strawberry seeds

Natural Powders

You can also add natural powders to your scrub for more benefits. Here are some examples.

  • Ground hibiscus leaves: antioxidants, skin healing
  • Cocoa: prevent signs of aging
  • Rose Petals (ground): help balance the oils in your skin, aroma
  • Oatmeal (ground): soaks up excess oil, and treats dried skin)
  • Ground coffee: antioxidant, smells amazing

Clays

Clays cleanse and detoxify the skin. They draw out impurities from skin pores, and they generally boost circulation to promote glowing skin.

Types of Clays

  • French Green Clay
  • Kaolin Clay
  • Bentonite Clay

Carrier Oil or Butter

Oils and kinds of butter are skin conditioning and moisturizing. They improve the consistency of your sugar scrub and safely carry any essential oils you are using onto your skin.

Types of Carrier Oils

Types of Butters

  • Shea Butter
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Mango Butter

Essential Oils

The last ingredient you’ll need to make your own sugar scrub recipe is essential oils. You can get different benefits based on the different essential oils you use. Here are some of my favorite essential oils to use in sugar scrub recipes.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil is calming and soothing, It will help moisturize your skin and calm you.

Mandarin Essential Oil

Mandarin Essential Oil is energizing and great for a morning shower. Using it in a sugar scrub recipe can also help stimulate your skin to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Another energizing citrus oil, Grapefruit Essential Oil is another one to try on your sugar scrub. This oil will help shrink pores to help balance oil production.

Veins Essential Oil Blend

Have poor circulation or varicose veins? Try a sugar scrub using our Veins Essential Oil Blend, the sugar will work with the essential oils to stimulate circulation for healthier veins.

Always dilute an essential oil when using it on the skin. This essential oil recipe is unlikely to cause skin irritation when diluted properly. If the oil has oxidized (been left with the cap off for long periods of time,) it is more likely to cause skin irritation. Check out this dilution chart for diluting this essential oil properly.

If you are pregnant, consult your doctor prior to use.

We don’t recommend ingesting essential oils unless under the direction of a doctor certified in aromatherapy. For more information on why we don’t ingest essential oils check out this blog post

Sugar Scrub Recipe: Make Your Own DIY Sugar Scrub

Recipe by Katie Veldkamp

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Butter or Coconut Oil (solid)

  • 1 Tbsp Carrier Oil

  • 30 drops Essential Oil

  • 1 cup Sugar

  • Small jar or similar container

Directions

  • Melt the butter in a double boiler or microwave using 15-second intervals.
  • Add fractionated coconut oil and essential oil and stir. If the mixture has begun to harden before the oil is mixed, reheat until just melted.
  • Stir in coffee and sugar until fully incorporated.
  • Store mixture in a sealable container.
  • To use, apply a small amount in circular motions on wet skin to exfoliate.

Notes

  • Tip: for longer shelf life, make sure no moisture comes in contact with the sugar scrub. One of the best ways to do this is to scoop the sugar scrub out with a spoon rather than using your fingers.
  • If you’re adding some natural additives, here are the amounts I recommend: Clay and cocoa powder – 1 tsp, Flowers – 1-2 tbsp, Ground coffee and oatmeal – replace ½ cup of sugar
