Rubies LV is a faith-based, survivor-led nonprofit dedicated to addressing and preventing sex trafficking in the heart of Las Vegas. Their mission is twofold: to intercept the cycle of exploitation and to help victims and their families find a path to collective healing.
Rubies LV: A Community-Wide Shield
Because human trafficking often hides in plain sight, Rubies LV takes a proactive, community-first approach. For instance, they are regularly found in local schools, speaking to students about prevention and red flags. Beyond the classroom, they furthermore act as a vital bridge between resources by consulting with fellow non-profits to pool assets. Additionally, they partner directly with Las Vegas casinos. Consequently, by training resort and casino staff to identify and report signs of trafficking, they turn the city’s largest industry into a front-line defense for the vulnerable.
The Power of Lived Experience
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Samantha Summers-Rivas, the Director of Empowerment and Outreach at Rubies LV. Specifically, we asked what makes their work unique within the Las Vegas community. In response, she pointed to empathy as the core of their mission:
“Rubies LV is best at truly understanding the people we serve. Many of our staff members have walked through these same fires. That shared foundation of past trauma creates an immediate level of trust. Our clients know they aren’t just talking to an advocate—they’re talking to someone who truly relates to them. It allows us to provide the most effective advice and support possible.”
Front-Line Advocacy of Rubies LV
For Samantha and her team, a “typical day” doesn’t exist. Their work is a 24/7 commitment that shifts based on the needs of the community.
“Some days, we are responding to crisis calls throughout the night,” Samantha shared. “Other days, we’re in meetings with government officials or working alongside local law enforcement to help locate victims. We also make it a priority to stand beside survivors during their trial dates—ensuring they know they have a team behind them that supports them 100%.”
From Brands to Breakthroughs
One of the most profound breakthroughs Rubies LV facilitates is the branding tattoo cover-up program. For many survivors, tattoos forced upon them by traffickers are constant, painful reminders of their past.
“We’ve seen incredible transformations through these cover-ups,” Samantha highlighted. “You can actually see the light come back into their eyes when that brand is finally gone. It closes a dark chapter of their life and allows them to move forward without that physical weight holding them back.”
