Balms vs. Salves
When it comes to natural skincare, understanding the distinction between balms and salves can enhance your DIY experiences. Balms typically have a thicker, more solid consistency due to a higher ratio of waxes, which provides a more protective barrier on the skin. They are perfect for localized applications, offering targeted relief and hydration while forming a shield against external elements. On the other hand, salves often have a more loose, ointment-like texture with a lighter formulation. This allows for easier application over larger areas, promoting soothing effects that can be absorbed more quickly into the skin. Both balms and salves are wonderful options for nurturing your skin, but choosing the right one for your needs can elevate your natural skincare routine to new heights!
What’s in This Healing Balm Recipe?
Coconut Oil (Solid)
Coconut Oil is crucial in achieving the perfect consistency and moisturizing effects of your Hemp Seed Healing Balm. Its solid form at room temperature ensures a smooth, creamy texture that feels luxurious upon application. Rich in fatty acids, coconut oil deeply hydrates the skin, preventing dryness and helping to retain moisture.
Beeswax
Beeswax is essential in creating the perfect balm-like consistency for your Hemp Seed Healing Balm. It provides a desirable thickness and creates a protective layer over the skin, effectively locking in moisture and preventing transepidermal water loss. This barrier soothes and hydrates the skin and shields it from environmental irritants.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp Seed Oil is the star ingredient in your Hemp Seed Healing Balm, bringing many benefits. Its unique consistency contributes to the balm’s smooth application and imparts a lovely green tint, making your creation visually appealing! Packed with essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants, hemp seed oil supports the body’s natural healing system, promoting skin regeneration and reducing inflammation.
Cornstarch
Cornstarch plays a vital role in enhancing the overall texture of your Hemp Seed Healing Balm. By incorporating cornstarch, you’ll achieve a smoother, less greasy feel that glides effortlessly onto your skin. This ingredient absorbs excess oils while providing a velvety finish, making your balm easy to apply without any unwanted residue.
Palmarosa Essential Oil
Palmarosa Essential Oil is a remarkable addition to your Hemp Seed Healing Balm. It is renowned for its ability to relax muscles and promote well-being. Its natural properties help alleviate tension in overworked muscles, making it ideal for post-exercise recovery. This oil also invigorates the senses, making you feel energized and ready to take on the day.
Tangerine Essential Oil
Tangerine Essential Oil enhances the aroma of your Hemp Seed Healing Balm and offers a refreshing boost to your mood! Known for its cheerful and uplifting scent, Tangerine Essential Oil can help alleviate stress, making it perfect for creating a calming atmosphere during your self-care routine.
Eucalyptus (Globulus) Essential Oil
Eucalyptus Essential Oil is a powerful component of your Hemp Seed Healing Balm, renowned for its impressive immune-boosting properties. This refreshing oil not only promotes a sense of clarity and focus but also supports your body’s natural defense mechanisms. With its soothing aroma, eucalyptus helps clear the respiratory tract, making breathing easier and allowing you to relax fully after an intense workout.

tip from katie
- In most Simply Earth recipes, you’ll notice that we usually melt all the oils together (except for the essential oils) before adding the rest of the ingredients. We don’t add hemp seed oil until step 2 in this recipe. This is because hemp seed has a lower smoke point than most carrier oils, and we want to avoid overheating it.
