What is Witch Hazel?

Witch hazel has been a part of folk medicine for centuries. As a natural astringent, it’s best known for its healing properties and as a multipurpose remedy. Modern-day uses range from aiding skin care to treating insect bites. Its uses even stretch into cosmetic industries with products like toners and cleansers that contain small amounts of witch hazel. While this ingredient may sound intimidating, witch hazel is surprisingly easy to incorporate into your everyday routine, from battling breakouts to soothing swollen bug bites.

Witch Hazel

If you’re looking for a natural way to soothe skin and shrink pores, look no further than witch hazel! This common skincare ingredient has been an astringent in folk remedies for centuries. Witch hazel helps reduce the appearance of large pores and remove excess oil, making it the perfect addition to your DIY face toner.

Almond Oil

It’s important always to dilute your recipe with some extra carrier oil. For this recipe, we chose almond oil, which carries plenty of vitamins that allow your skin to reach a healthier balance.

Take this recipe up a notch by adding Simply Earth’s Natural Solubilizer. This user-friendly solubilizer combines essential oils with gentle cleansing agents, resulting in a wonderfully balanced toner for your skin.

Things to Remember When Using This Recipe

Always dilute an essential oil when using it on the skin. This essential oil recipe is unlikely to cause skin irritation when diluted properly. If the oil has oxidized (been left with the cap off for long periods of time,) it is more likely to cause skin irritation. Check out this dilution chart for diluting this essential oil properly.

Some essential oil recipes are not generally safe to use if you are pregnant. Consult your doctor prior to use.

  • ~1 oz witch hazel

  • 2 tsp almond oil

Witch Hazel has been providing many skincare benefits for centuries, but it certainly isn’t limited to toner. This powerhouse ingredient can be used cotton swabbed onto blemishes or redness as a spot treatment to calm skin irritations and can also be used as a DIY face mask mixed with other ingredients such as lavender oil, coconut oil, and honey. Not only that, but Witch Hazel is also great for calming sunburns or razor burn post-shaving. With so many uses, there’s no doubt why this medicinal plant has been treasured for centuries!
