What’s Inside Your Lip Balm-Making Kit
Shea Butter
Renowned for its intense moisturizing properties, Shea Butter contains vitamins and fatty acids that deeply nourish and hydrate the skin. This makes it an excellent ingredient for lip balms, effectively preventing dryness and promoting soft, supple lips.
Almond Oil
Almond Oil is a lightweight oil that is easily absorbed by the skin without leaving a greasy residue. Rich in essential vitamins A and E, it is celebrated for softening and soothing skin. Almond oil hydrates and provides a smooth, silky base for lip care products, enhancing their application and effectiveness.
Beeswax
As a thickening agent, Beeswax creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture while shielding the lips from environmental elements. This natural ingredient contributes to a velvety texture in lip balm, ensuring a smooth and luxurious application.
Cetyl Alcohol
Cetyl Alcohol acts as an emollient, helping to soften and smooth the skin, making it easier to apply lip balms. Additionally, cetyl alcohol stabilizes the formulation, ensuring the ingredients remain well-mixed and effective.
Sweet Orange Essential Oil
Sweet Orange Essential Oil is known for its uplifting and refreshing citrus scent, which can brighten your mood and energize your spirit. Beyond its aromatic benefits, this essential oil provides a soothing effect and a pleasant fragrance to lip balms, making the application a delightful experience for the senses.
Spearmint Essential Oil
Spearmint Essential Oil offers a cool, refreshing sensation and a delightful minty scent. This invigorating essential oil not only helps to refresh the lips but also has soothing properties that can calm irritation.
Lip Balm Tray & Spatula
The lip balm tray and spatula are essential for crafting homemade lip balms. Together, they allow you to make up to 50 lip balms simultaneously! The tray facilitates easy pouring and cooling of the balm, while the spatula helps smooth the balms and clean up the tray.
Lip Balm Tubes
Lip Balm Tubes These convenient containers are perfect for storing and applying homemade lip balm. Designed for easy use, they fit perfectly in the kit’s lip balm tray, ensuring you can keep your lips moisturized on the go.

Sweet Mint Lip Balm Recipe
Time: 10 mins
Est. Shelf Life: 12 Months
Yield: 11.7 fl oz
Units Made: 50
Ingredients
- From Your Kit
1 cup (7.6oz) Shea Butter
2 Tbsp (1 oz) Almond Oil
½ cup (2oz) Beeswax
2 Tbsp (0.5oz) Cetyl Alcohol
40 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil
14 drops Spearmint Essential Oil
Lip Balm Tray & Spatula
50 Lip Balm Tubes
Directions
- To prep the Lip Balm Tubes, remove the caps and check that the tube insert is at its lowest level.
- To prep the Lip Balm Tray, remove the attached spatula and flip the tray over. The Simply Earth logo should not be visible. Fill the tray with the Lip Balm Tubes, placing them upside down into the holes in the tray. Flip the tray back over so that the Simply Earth logo is visible. If any tubes fall out, reinsert them in the tray. Place your prepped tray on top of a cookie sheet or similar pan to transfer it to the fridge later.
- In a double boiler (or a microwave using a microwavable pitcher and 30-second intervals), melt together the Shea Butter, Almond Oil, Beeswax, and Cetyl Alcohol, stirring occasionally.
- Once everything has just melted, add the essential oils and stir.
- Pour the lip balm mixture onto the Lip Balm Tray. Use the spatula to scrape the mixture evenly into the tubes.
- Move the tray into the fridge to cool. Once the lip balm has set, use the spatula to scrape excess lip balm from the top of the tray. Remove the Lip Balm Tubes from the tray, replace the lids, and label them. To use, apply to the lips for soothing, softening, and richly moisturizing benefits.
tip from katie
- This recipe uses volume measurements (like cups), which are less precise than weight measurements (like oz). I recommend making this recipe by weight to achieve perfectly filled lip balm containers if you have a scale at home. A small measurement error can result in several unfilled or partially filled lip balm tubes. If you don’t have a scale, consider melting and measuring your ingredients for a more accurate volume measurement. Have any questions about this recipe? Watch our tutorial video on YouTube!
Safety Information
Always Use Diluted Oils
Always dilute an essential oil when using it on the skin. This essential oil recipe is unlikely to cause skin irritation when diluted properly. If the oil has oxidized (been left with the cap off for long periods of time,) it is more likely to cause skin irritation. Check out this dilution chart for diluting this essential oil properly.
