Human trafficking is a hidden crisis that devastates millions of lives. For the women ensnared in its web, finding a way out and rebuilding a new life seems nearly impossible. Since 2005, NightLight International has been on a mission to change that. Started by Annie Dieselberg in Bangkok, Thailand, NightLight empowers women to escape, heal, and reclaim their lives. Today, with operations in Bangkok and Missouri, this organization is making waves both locally and globally.
NightLight’s mission is bold and clear—Reach, Rescue, Restore. But what does that mean in practice? During an interview with Shauna Storey, a team member at NightLight, we explored how these three pillars translate into life-changing action and learned about the incredible strides they’re making.
How NightLight International is Transforming Lives
1. Reach — Taking Hope Directly to Those Who Need It
Many women working in the sex industry or trapped in trafficking don’t actively seek help. That’s where NightLight steps in. They proactively go to the places where these women are, building trust and relationships in a nonjudgmental way.
Women who endure traumatic experiences often grapple with mistrust and fear. NightLight staff surround them with kindness, patience, and love, offering something they may never have known—true hope and support. Through this outreach, NightLight begins to plant seeds of change that can blossom into transformation.
2. Rescue — Creating Pathways to a New Life
Rescue efforts at NightLight are about more than escaping a dangerous situation; they’re about building a sustainable future. NightLight helps these incredible women see their worth and gives them the tools to change their lives.
One of NightLight’s most unique programs is job creation. Women receive dignified jobs, producing handmade jewelry and clothing that NightLight sells through its online store. This not only helps them earn a reliable income but instills confidence and provides the structure needed for a fresh start. Every product is a symbol of resilience and hope.
3. Restore — The Healing Journey
Rescue is just the beginning. Restoration means walking with these women every step of the way as they heal from trauma and rebuild their lives. Many lack a solid support system so NightLight fills that gap by offering unconditional care and encouragement.
Recently, NightLight achieved an incredible milestone—they now have a counselor specializing in trauma and grief available several times a week. This counselor has already helped women break through emotional barriers and rediscover their strength.
When asked what sets NightLight apart, Shauna said, “We have a tenacious love that does not give up. Even when cases are challenging, we stay the course.”
The Challenges and the Triumphs
Working in an organization like NightLight comes with its share of challenges. Shauna shared that one of the hardest aspects is allowing the women space to make mistakes and learn. “Most of us want to fix everything,” she said, “but letting them fall allows them to grow stronger.”
Despite the challenges, NightLight has seen amazing victories. Their partnership with the trauma counselor has been a game-changer. Women who felt “stuck” now find themselves moving forward, breaking chains of trauma and reclaiming their dignity.
Simply Earth visits NightLight Bangkok
On February 17th, a few of our American employees had the opportunity to go to Bangkok and spend the day at the welcome center. We started our day with a church service and a tour of their facility. NightLight creates local job opportunities and employs women for their online business who were involved in the sex industry. They employ these women through a local coffee shop run by NightLight and a business where the women make exquisite necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. They have a showroom where the items can be purchased. Being able to witness first-hand the impact that these businesses have in women’s lives was such a heartfelt experience. Without organizations willing to do the hard work, these women would never have these opportunities.
