COVID-19 & Essential Oils: Face Mask Mist Recipes

We’re living in crazy times. If you’re anything like us at Simply Earth, the mask you wear to work every day is not your favorite accessory. After 8 hours, your ears are starting to get sore, the makeup has been rubbed off your nose and cheeks, and you can still smell the pizza you had for lunch.

Short of taking up a diet of oatmeal and buttered noodles or keeping a toothbrush at work, I created a few recipes that might help with that last part while providing extra benefits to your mood and health!

All of these recipes use 70% alcohol which is what the CDC recommends to to help battle germs and viruses. Remember though, these spray recipes won’t replace the regular washing of your mask.

In these recipes we recommend using a 151+ proof alcohol. That’s because this grade of alcohol will act as a solubilizer. That means the essential oils will spread uniformly throughout the alcohol.

Most of us don’t have that kind of alcohol on hand. So instead, feel free to use 91%+ rubbing alcohol, or 3% hydrogen peroxide. Just be sure to shake the spray well before using.

If you’re using hydrogen peroxide change the recipe to be 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide and 3 tbsp distilled water.

You’ll notice if you’re using rubbing alcohol when making these sprays they will have a strong alcohol smell. Because of this I don’t recommend spraying your mask with this recipe immediately before using.

Instead, spray your mask then wait 20-30 minutes before putting it on.

Defender smells like Fall, making it a really fun one to add to your face mask this next season. I’ll warn you, though — it may leave you wanting pumpkin pie and hot apple cider!

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp alcohol (for best results use 151 proof (~75% ethanol) alcohol)
  • 11 Defender Essential Oil Blend
  • 1 tbsp distilled water
  • 2 oz spray bottle (aluminum, glass, or PET grade plastic)

Instructions

Add alcohol and essential oils to the spray bottle. Shake to mix. Fill the rest of the way with distilled water. Spray onto both sides of the mask.

Note: Some people may find the clove and cinnamon in the Defender essential oil blend irritating to their nose. For this recipe, I’d recommend people to spray their masks at least 30 minutes before using. Check out the Defender Essential Oil Blend product listing for safety information.
