Plant Description
Lemongrass is a tall perennial plant that belongs to the Poaceae grass family. It has bright green-colored leafy stalks that gracefully arch upward before bending downward. Lemongrass is native to India and Sri Lanka, grows up to 2-4 ft tall, and has widths reaching 2-3 ft wide.
Chemical Constituents
Geranial & Neral
Geranial and Neral are the two geometric isomers of Citral. Citral has a strong lemony-citrus scent and is used as an aroma compound in perfumery. It is considered a critical component responsible for the lemon note. Citral also has pheromonal effects in acari and insects and has shown promising insecticidal and antifungal activity against storage pests.
Geranyl Acetate
Geranyl acetate is a colorless liquid with a pleasant floral or fruity rose aroma. It is used primarily as a component of perfumes for creams and soaps and as a flavoring ingredient. It is used mainly in rose, lavender, and geranium formulations with a desired sweet, fruity, or citrus aroma.
