What’s in This Lotion Recipe?

Emulsifying Wax

Emulsifying Wax is the backbone of your lotion’s texture, giving it a creamy, professional consistency. This unique wax seamlessly binds water and oils together and ensures your product stays stable. Best of all, it moisturizes your skin without leaving behind a greasy residue, allowing you to enjoy soft, hydrated skin with every use.

Almond Oil

Almond Oil is known for being easily absorbed into the skin. This lightweight oil provides nourishing hydration while leaving a slightly oily feeling that ensures your skin feels soft and smooth for longer. Its subtle scent, with a hint of nuttiness, adds a delicate fragrance to your lotion, making it a soothing and natural choice for your skincare needs.

Sweet Dreams Essential Oil Blend

The Sweet Dreams Essential Oil Blend is a kid-safe blend designed to give your child a natural nudge toward bedtime. Made with kid-friendly essential oils, it helps calm and relax your child, creating a peaceful environment perfect for winding down.

Blood Orange Essential Oil

The Blood Orange Essential Oil boasts a bright, citrusy, tangy aroma that instantly uplifts your spirits. Known for its calming and sedative properties, this oil is perfect for creating a peaceful ambiance to help ease your child into a restful sleep.

Fir Needle Essential Oil

The Fir Needle Essential Oil has a fresh, evergreen aroma that evokes the calming essence of a tranquil forest. Its grounding scent helps soothe emotions, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable Glycerin is a natural and versatile humectant that moisturizes and hydrates your skin. Its soothing properties make it an essential ingredient in many skincare routines, helping to lock in moisture and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Gentle and nourishing, it’s ideal for all skin types and ensures your skin feels soft, smooth, and rejuvenated.

Geogard ECT Preservative

Geogard ECT Preservative is a natural and effective solution for extending the shelf life of your homemade skincare products. This preservative can be used in most recipes containing water, making it a versatile addition to your DIY formulations.

Lullaby Lotion Recipe

Lullaby Lotion Recipe

Ingredients

  • 📦 FROM YOUR BOX
  • 1 tsp Emulsifying Wax

  • 2 tsp Almond Oil

  • 15 drops Sweet Dreams Essential Oil Blend

  • 4 drops Blood Orange Essential Oil

  • 4 drops Fir Needle Essential Oil

  • 🏠 FROM YOUR HOME
  • 1 tsp Vegetable Glycerin 🛒

  • 24 drops Geogard ECT Preservative 🛒

  • 4 fl oz bottle

  • 🥄 TOOLS
  • Thermometer

  • Immersion blender (or similar tool)

Directions

  • Create an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice. Set aside.
  • Add the distilled water and Vegetable Glycerin (optional) to a glass measuring pitcher or similar heatproof container. Ensure the container is large enough to hold the oil ingredients and the immersion blender.
  • In a separate glass measuring pitcher (or similar heat-proof container), add the Emulsifying Wax and Almond Oil.
  • Fill the bottom of a large pot with about 2 inches of water. Set both jars from steps 1 and 2 into the pot. Heat both mixtures on medium-low heat until the oil mixture is melted.
  • Remove them from the heat once the oil mixture has melted and both mixtures are at similar temperatures (around 155°F).
  • Place the immersion blender into the water mixture. Turn the blender at a slow speed. While blending, pour the oil mixture into the water mixture. Mix for about 1 minute until combined (over-mixing the lotion can create foam in the lotion).
  • Set the lotion container in the ice bath and stir the mixture by hand. The lotion will be quite thin initially but slowly thicken as it cools. Continue stirring by hand until it reaches room temperature.
  • Add the essential oils and preservatives to a small bowl and stir to mix. Pour a small amount of the lotion (about 1 Tbsp) into the bowl and stir the lotion, preservatives, and essential oils together.
  • Pour the mixture from step 8 into the larger lotion mixture and stir until thoroughly combined.
  • Pour the lotion into small bottles. The lotion will continue to thicken for 24 hours.

tip from katie

  • If you prefer to make this recipe without a preservative, store the lotion in the fridge and expect an estimated 2-6 weeks of shelf life. Discard lotion when you notice a change in smell, consistency, or appearance.

FAQs and Troubleshooting

What if my lotion is too fluffy or too thick?

If your lotion turns out too fluffy or thick, don’t worry—it’s an easy fix! Add a small amount of carrier oil, such as almond or coconut oil, and whip it again until you achieve your desired consistency. A little bit goes a long way, so add the oil gradually to avoid making it too runny.

Can I use a different essential oil blend?

Absolutely! The essential oil blend is fully customizable to suit your preferences or needs. If the current blend doesn’t suit your liking, please substitute it with oils you love, such as lavender for relaxation or citrus oils for an uplifting aroma. To ensure safety, make sure to properly dilute the essential oils according to recommendations.

How long does the lotion last?

When stored in a cool, dry place, this lotion lasts 6–12 months. Keep it in a clean, airtight container that is fresh and uncontaminated. If you notice any changes in scent, color, or texture over time, it’s best to make a fresh batch to maintain optimal quality.
